But why would people need to care about when they buy the card? When 30 days go up, they buy a new one. It’s not like that 13th card is going to expire at the end of the year.

Because not every month is 30 days long. For instance, if you purchase your TAP card at the beginning of January, it is expired today. If you decide to do the responsible thing and buy it a few days before the end of the month to avoid expiration, the card now expires 30 days from the day you purchased it. This means you lose the extra few days left on the previous 30 day pass you paid for.

I don’t think this is a difficult concept to understand. I used to just pay for my card on payday, and not worry about losing any value or changing the date it expires on. Now, I have to hold on to the money until the last possible second, to make sure I don’t waste any of my meager and hard earned money.

Like I said, it’s just another way to screw the poor out of their money. This all goes without mentioning the fact that they raised the prices from $62.00 to $75.00 (and regular fares from $1.25 to $1.50), despite the passage of Measure R in 2008. Measure R was a 1/2 cent sales tax hike to raise $40 billion to improve our Metro system. What are they spending this money on? Lastly, let’s not forget that no one is more directly impacted by sales tax than the poor, due to it’s inherently regressive nature.
